The Municipality of Lefkosia The Municipality of Lefkosia was established in July 1878, at the beginning of British rule in Cyprus. Until 1882, its administrative area included only Lefkosia within the Walls. Today, Lefkosia is the metropolitan municipality and the administrative capital of the Lefkosia District. It comprises of the municipalities of Lefkosia, Agios Dometios, Aglantzia, and Egkomi. Lefkosia Now Lefkosia is home to the main public service offices, governmental bodies, and key organisations. The Presidential Palace is also located here. Its historic core is encircled by the 16th century Venetian Walls with eleven bastions and three gates. Outside the Walls, Lefkosia has developed into a modern city with universities, embassies, shopping districts and business centres. It is a major educational hub, home to the University of Cyprus and several private universities. Major EU-funded regeneration projects are reshaping the city’s urban landscape.
