Park of the Old GSP Area The city’s latest addition is the transformation of a historic stadium site into a modern space that redefines greenery in public spaces. This major EU-funded project features a square, restaurants, galleries, a bookshop, a multipurpose hall, cafés, an open-air amphitheatre and underground parking. All rooftop areas have been landscaped to create a green oasis. THE SQUARES Plateia Faneromenis (Square) Life in the historic square in front of the Church of Panagia Faneromeni awakens early. In the mornings, the older generation can be found sipping Cyprus coffee in the cafés, while at lunchtime, people flock to beloved eateries. As evening falls, the square’s cafés and bars hum with energy. This vibrant hub is surrounded by shops, galleries, and important landmarks, including the Faneromeni School (1857), the Faneromeni Library, and the Marble Mausoleum (1930). Plateia Eleftherias (Square) The central square of Lefkosia serves as a symbolic bridge between the historic city within the Walls and its modern surroundings. The square was redesigned by the world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects and the project was implemented by the Municipality of Lefkosia and the Cyprus Government, co-financed by the EU. The square, whose name means “Freedom”, has become a vibrant hub for cultural events and everyday life, with its transformed moat envisioned as a park featuring landscaped gardens, water elements, shops, street furniture as well as a small open-air amphitheatre. Park of Old GSP Area Plateia Faneromenis (Square) Athalassa Park Plateia Dimarchou Lellou Dimitriadi ( Square) This square, named after former mayor Lellos Dimitriadis, is one of Lefkosia’s newest public spaces. It was designed to breathe new life into the heart of the city within the Walls. Located near the new municipality building, it is surrounded by sandstone buildings, workshops, bars, and restaurants. At its centre stands a modernist building dating from 1965 and designed by Stavros Economou, which once housed the Old Municipal Market. Today, its carefully restored interior houses the CYENS Centre of Excellence, which specialises in interactive media, smart systems and emerging technologies.
