3 The Venetian Walls The design of the edition was inspired by the impressive Mediaeval Walls which encircle Lefkosia’s inner city. Built in 1567, at the time of the Venetian rule in Cyprus, by engineer Giulio Savorgnan, these star-shaped Walls feature eleven heart-shaped bastions – Caraffa, Podocataro, Constanza, D’Avila, Tripoli, Roccas, Mula, Quirini, Barbaro, Loredan and Flatro – and three grand gates. Originally surrounded by a moat, the Walls are the city’s most important 16th-century monument, defining the mediaeval Cypriot capital, Lefkosia. Moreover, their construction reflects the hard work of the people of Cyprus, and in particular the inhabitants of Lefkosia, whose hard labour brought this remarkable monument to life.
