The then Archbishop of Cyprus, Germanos, laid the foundation stone in May 1695 and the church was completed within the same year. This three-aisled domed basilica is regarded as the most important church built during the Ottoman period. Among its important icons and 19th-century iconostasis lies the oldest icon in the church, that of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, flanked by Ioakim and Anna, strongly influenced by 15th-century Italian art. It was inaugurated in 1902, replacing an older church built in 1642. Its construction was financially supported by the Spanish Royal Family and Franciscan monks. The Spanish influence is evident in the wooden statues as well as the ceiling which is decorated with royal coats of arms. The church has a simple and elegant façade, a circular dome ceiling and ten chapels. The sanctuary was renovated in 1998, adding stained glass and wooden statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph.
