25 Cathedral of Agios Ioannis Located next to the Archbishop’s Palace and opposite the historic Pancyprian Gymnasium, this important cathedral was built by Archbishop Nikiforos in 1662, with a narthex added by Archbishop Chrysanthos in 1779. The church is single-aisled, barrel-vaulted, standing on the ruins of the mediaeval Benedictine Monastery of Agios Ioannis tou Pipi. It is worth mentioning that it is the only church from the Ottoman period to be fully decorated with impressive interior frescoes, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Its 18th century wooden iconostasis is considered one of the finest in Cyprus. Plateia Arch. It is the only remaining church within the Walls of Lefkosia that dates back to the Middle Byzantine period. Built by Helena Palaiologina, the Greek-born wife of King John II of Cyprus, it was originally erected as a cross-in-square domed structure. Over the centuries, this L-shaped church has undergone a series of architectural additions which have altered, but not erased, its original identity. Many of its most valued Byzantine icons are preserved and exhibited at the Byzantine Museum in Lefkosia.
