ΟΙΚΙΑ HOME

Beyond being a basic human need, housing has always been a living embodiment of culture, identity and social organisation. It reflects the living conditions, values and priorities of each era. In Cyprus, a place with a long history and rich cultural heritage, housing tells a story that spans from antiquity to the modern era. This publication accompanies the photography exhibition titled “HOME,” which highlights precisely this timeless evolution of the home in Cyprus. Through the presentation of the photographic material, visitors are invited to journey through different time periods, observe the changes in the form, materials and function of the home, and reflect on its significance as the fundamental core of human existence. From early settlement structures and traditional houses that harmonised with the natural landscape to today’s urban dwellings that meet the demands of modern life, the exhibition sheds light on the multiple facets of the concept of “home”. At the same time, it highlights the challenges associated with housing in the present day, inviting a broader dialogue on the future of housing. The presentation of the exhibition within the framework of the Informal Council of Housing Ministers of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union lends particular significance to the initiative, fostering discussion on key issues related to sustainable development, social cohesion and the right to housing. This publication aims to serve not only as an accompanying document to the exhibition but also as a stimulus for reflection on the concept of “home”. A space that, beyond its physical existence, remains inextricably linked to identity, memory and human experience. Constantinos Ioannou Minister of Interior
