Πριν από αιώνες, η Αγία Ελένη έφτασε στην Κύπρο, κρατώντας τον Τίμιο Σταυρό. Όμως το νησί υπέφερε. Δέκα χρόνια χωρίς βροχή, φίδια παντού και σαράντα δαίμονες που έβγαιναν τη νύχτα και τρόμαζαν τους ανθρώπους. Η Αγία δεν φοβήθηκε. Διέταξε να σκάψουν ένα βαθύ λάκκο. Ο ιερέας ψιθύρισε προσευχές και ένας-ένας, οι δαίμονες παγιδεύτηκαν! Όταν μπήκε κι ο τελευταίος, μια τεράστια πέτρα σφράγισε το άνοιγμα και από πάνω χτίστηκε μια εκκλησία. Όμως, ο Τίμιος Σταυρός εξαφανίστηκε! Τότε, ένα όνειρο την οδήγησε στο βουνό Όλυμπος. Εκεί, πάνω σε ερείπια αρχαίου ναού, τον βρήκε! «Εδώ θα χτίσουμε μοναστήρι!» είπε. Για να χτιστεί, η Αγία ξεγέλασε τους σαράντα δαίμονες. Τους έβαλε να κουβαλήσουν πέτρες, κι όταν τελείωσαν, τους παγίδευσε ξανά, βαθιά στη γη! Το βουνό άλλαξε όνομα και έγινε Σταυροβούνι, δηλαδή το βουνό που φυλάσσεται ο σταυρός. Από τότε, το Σταυροβούνι στέκει σαν σημάδι ότι το καλό πάντα νικά. Οι δαίμονες κοιμούνται… Μα αν σταθείς σιωπηλός, ίσως ακούσεις τις φωνές τους, παγιδευμένες για πάντα στα έγκατα του βουνού. Centuries ago, Saint Helen arrived in Cyprus, carrying the True Cross. A dream led her to Mount Olympus. There, among the ruins of an ancient temple, she found it! “Here, we shall build a monastery!” she declared. To complete it, she tricked the forty demons—she made them carry stones and when they finished, she trapped them once more, deep underground! The mountain was renamed Stavrovouni—the Mountain of the Cross. Since then, Stavrovouni has stood as a sign that good always prevails. The demons sleep… But if you stand still and listen, you might hear their voices, forever trapped in the depths of the mountain.
