In Larnaca, there is a magical lake—Aliki. In the winter, it fills with water and flocks of pink flamingos that travel from afar to dance upon its surface. In the summer, the water vanishes, revealing a vast, glistening white desert. They say that long ago, vineyards grew here, that made the sweetest grapes. One day, a weary traveler arrived—Saint Lazarus. Hungry and thirsty, he asked for a single bunch of grapes. But a woman refused him. “Then let everything turn to salt!” he declared. And the land turned white as snow. Another story tells of a woman who came from a distant land. Her name was Umm Haram, and the people loved her, for she cared for the poor. One day, her horse was startled by a snake, and she fell to her death. In that moment, a massive boulder flew from the Arabian desert, crossed the sea, and landed beside her—casting on her grave the very shadow she had once wished for. Years passed. The lake filled and emptied. People gathered salt, and when their work was done, their donkeys would flick their tails happily. Today, the lake is still full of secrets. Some are whispered by the wind… others are guarded by the salt. Stories of Salt Ιστορίες από Αλάτι
