Conclusion Having successfully joined the EU, the people of Cyprus still yearn for the reunification of their country. The government of Cyprus is determined to continue its search for a viable and functional solution within the parameters of the UN resolutions as well as the new political context created by the accession of Cyprus to the EU, in order to safeguard the rights of all Cypriots. In this manner, all Cypriots will fully enjoy the benefits and advantages of EU membership and bring about the reunification of their country after almost five decades of artificial division. Initiatives by President Papadopoulos to reactivate the peace process in the aftermath of the failed Annan Plan led to the 8 July 2006 Agreement between the two communities. Regrettably, the Agreement’s implementation was undermined by the Turkish side. New initiatives by President Christofias broke the deadlock, moved the process forward, and resulted in the commencement of full-fledged negotiations between the two communities in September 2008, directed toward a comprehensive settlement. After the change on the leadership of the Turkish-Cypriot community many unfruitful meetings took place between the leaders of the two communities. President Anastasiades relaunched the negotiations, which led to the Conference in Crans Montana in June 2017. The Conference came to a standstill due to Turkey's insistence on the permanent presence of military troops in Cyprus and on maintaining its invasive rights. In 2021 President Anastasiades participated in an informal meeting in Geneva, where again Turkey’s refusal to reaffirm their commitment to the agreed basis of a bi-communal bi-communal federation with political equality as defined in UN resolutions, their insistence on the equal status of the "two-states" as a precondition for the resumption of negotiations and their rejection of the Secretary-General's proposal for the appointment of a special envoy, led the effort to a deadlock.
